Course Description: Today, more than 60 years after his tragic assassination President John F. Kennedy’s legacy is as prominent as ever. How much do we really know about John Kennedy the man and his presidency? What were his achievements and shortcomings? We begin our journey by focusing on the world Kennedy was born into and the family legacies that shaped him. From here, we look directly at Kennedy’s time in the military and his service in the House of Representatives and Senate. Our attention next turns to Kennedy’s presidency focusing on four key issue areas: the struggle with the Soviet Union, relations with Cuba, Civil Rights and Vietnam. In our final class we examine the impact of his assassination on America and the world and look at Kennedy’s legacy.

ABOUT Martin Burns, A&S '98 (MA)
Independent Journalist and Odyssey Instructor

Martin Burns grew up in Glen Cove, New York. He went on to receive a BA in International Relations from Tufts University and a Masters in Government from the Johns Hopkins University. Most recently, Martin received a Masters in Conflict Transformation and Social Justice from the Queen’s University in Belfast. Martin’s dissertation at Queen’s focused on how the Sinn Féin leadership persuaded the broad Irish Republican constituency to support the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
