Course Description: Narrative medicine seeks to humanize healthcare by fostering empathy and understanding by emphasizing the lived experiences of patients and clinicians. More broadly, its practices help us listen more deeply and engage more meaningfully with others’ stories, our own experiences, and those encountered in works of art and literature.

Through journal articles, as well as a film and a graphic novel, this course introduces participants to narratives of illness, disability, and beyond, along with approaches to responding to them. Students will also explore a real-world application of narrative medicine, exploring techniques for facilitating workshops, while developing the skills needed to create spaces for reflection and connection.
