Baltimore, MD: Volunteering at Baltimore Hunger Project

Baltimore Skyline, Hopkins Alumni

Sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association

Join fellow alumni and friends as we pack and sort non-perishable food items into individual packages. The Baltimore Hunger Project is dedicated to eliminating the growing problem of weekend childhood hunger by feeding bodies and minds. They are bridging the gap between Friday and Monday by consistently providing weekend food packages to children identified as food insecure, in a compassionate and dignified manner.

Please wear comfortable clothing and close-toed shoes. The food packaged will be delivered the next day by BHP volunteers to local elementary schools. There, school guidance counselors will discreetly place the packages in children’s backpacks so those students can return to school Monday fully nourished and ready to learn.

Due to the nature of the work that they do, no one under the age of 14 is allowed in the warehouse. Volunteers are encouraged to donate food items from the Most Wanted List: Canned Tuna, Canned Chicken, Granola Bars, Protein Bars, Single-Serve Cereal Boxes, Fruit Snacks, Applesauce Pouches, and Juice Boxes.

While participating in off-campus events and meetings sponsored by the JHAA/JHM/JHHS participants must follow all public health guidelines mandated by the local jurisdiction and venue at the time of the event, including vaccination and masking and distancing guidance. Johns Hopkins strongly suggests that attendees who join in person be fully vaccinated. This is subject to change.
