Johns Hopkins CIM Seminar - What Illness Teaches Us About Vulnerability, Resilience, and Why Medicine Must Be Trusted

• Presented by the Johns Hopkins Center for Innovative Medicine and Hopkins at Home •

Illness has a way of stripping away our assumptions about control, certainty, and what it means to live a good life. Join bestselling author, Duke University professor, and podcast host Kate Bowler for a deeply human conversation about what serious illness can teach us about vulnerability, resilience, and our relationships with those who care for us.

Drawing on her experiences as a historian, patient, and observer of how we make meaning in difficult times, Bowler will explore what happens when familiar stories about strength, optimism, and overcoming adversity no longer feel sufficient. She will consider why honesty and compassion matter in moments of uncertainty—and why trust between patients, clinicians, and the institutions of medicine remains essential to helping people navigate some of life’s most difficult moments.
