Course Description: This course introduces the shortest classical music pieces ever, exploring how they became a distinct artistic practice and the practical reasons behind them. Going through the repertoire from the 16th century onwards, we will ultimately focus on 21st-century projects and solo violin works between 1 and 60 seconds long, with an occasional detour into non-classical genres such as punk, noise, and more.

Withdrawals & Refunds: 

If a course is canceled or closed, the registrant is notified immediately, and a full refund is processed automatically unless another course is requested. Registrants who wish to withdraw from an active course must complete the online Odyssey Refund Request Form. Attach any documentation to support your request (e.g., medical documentation, family crisis documentation, etc.).

  • 100% refund: Prior to the start of the course and after the first class.
  • No refunds: After the first week of each course unless in exceptional cases.

For single-session courses:
100% refundable within two (2) business days of the event.

Please note, refunds apply only to the tuition portion of an Odyssey participant’s charges and are not applicable to any fees or gifts made to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association. Registrants will be notified by email if a refund is approved within five (5) business days.

ABOUT Orest Smovzh

Orest Smovzh is a Ukrainian violinist currently based in Helsinki, Finland. He performs repertoire that spans over 800 years while actively commissioning and premiering contemporary music across Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. Orest is currently a doctorate candidate at Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki.
 

Orest holds degrees from National Music Academy of Ukraine in Kyiv, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore, USC Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles, and Peabody Institute in Baltimore. For the last few years, he has worked under the mentorship of Midori.
 

He recently worked and performed with pianists Ferenc Rados, Leon Fleisher, Fazıl Say, Thomas Hoppe, Albert Tiu, conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy, baritone Thomas Hampson, lute player Nigel North, and cellist Michael Kannen. As a soloist, he participated in historically informed performances with Masaaki Suzuki in Singapore and participated in outreach projects across Mexico, the USA, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Italy.
 

Orest’s main artistic activity at the moment is collaborating with composers and research. Only in 2024 he commission and premiered around 100 new works while researching contemporary caprices, etudes, and studies for violin solo.
