October 21 - November 11 (4 Sessions)

Tuesdays  7:00PM ET - 8:30PM ET

Virtual via Zoom

Course Description:  This course helps leaders of research and technical teams lead and manage better. Over four 90-minute sessions, participants will:

1.        Explore the big ideas in leadership for research/technical teams and how these ideas translate to practical, daily action.
2.        Investigate setting and holding high expectations, including why, how, and getting back on track.
3.        Probe what good communication looks like and how to improve your written and spoken communication with team members.
4.        Learn and apply tips on setting up processes, procedures, and workflows so your team members know what to do, understand how to do it, and can solve problems on their own.

In an era of unprecedented constraints, research leaders must do ever more with ever less. This is true regardless of setting: across universities, research firms, government data units, R&D functions, and evaluation teams, researchers must execute huge amounts of highly technical work, often with little time or staff capacity. The bad news is that accountability expectations and funding constraints are not easing. The good news is threefold. First, leadership is a set of behaviors, which means anyone can learn and practice them. Second, positive leadership practices can grow the capacity of teams to meet demands. Third, high-capacity teams sustain themselves, retaining and attracting high performers that do more and do better. This course takes a practical approach to leadership development, focusing on application and concrete takeaways.
