Course Description: Although none of us have turned into a monstrous insect while we slept or waited for years in front of a door meant only for us that never opened, we can imagine these events. Our world feels increasingly frightening and confusing or, to use a better word, Kafkaesque. This course offers an opportunity to read, discuss, and understand why Franz Kafka (1883-1924) continues to matter.

Participants Need:

  • Franz Kafka, The Metamorphosis, Susan Bernofsky, translator (New York: W.W. Norton, 2014).
  • Franz Kafka, The Trial, A New Translation Based on the Restored Text, Breon Mitchell, translator (New York: Shocken Books, 1998).
  • Franz Kafka, A Hunger Artist and Other Stories, Joyce Crick, translator (New York, Oxford University Press, 2012).
