About the Symposium

The Johns Hopkins Symposium on Alcohol-Associated Hepatitis was established in 2017 through a collaborative initiative between investigators at Johns Hopkins University and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Since its inception, three successful symposia have brought together leading researchers, clinicians, and trainees to share scientific discoveries, exchange innovative ideas, foster collaborations, and advance research and clinical management of alcohol-associated liver disease.

Building on the success of previous meetings, the 4th Johns Hopkins Symposium on Alcohol-Associated Hepatitis will bring together internationally recognized investigators, clinicians, and emerging scientists to discuss the latest advances in alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH), alcohol-associated cirrhosis, metabolic dysfunction and alcohol-associated liver disease (MetALD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and related liver disorders.

The scientific program will highlight cutting-edge discoveries and emerging perspectives across basic, translational, and clinical research, with particular emphasis on:

  • Disease Mechanisms and Pathogenesis: Molecular and cellular mechanisms of alcohol-associated liver injury, inflammation, fibrosis, and impaired liver regeneration.
  • Alcohol Use Disorders and Liver Disease: Interactions between alcohol consumption, metabolic dysfunction, and liver disease progression.
  • Translational Research and Emerging Technologies: Advances in single-cell and spatial omics, epigenomics, artificial intelligence, and human tissue-based research to uncover disease mechanisms and identify therapeutic targets.
  • Clinical Management and Therapeutic Advances: Current treatment strategies, emerging therapies, liver transplantation, and ongoing clinical trials for AH and related liver diseases.
  • Future Perspectives and Precision Medicine: Novel biomarkers, regenerative therapies, and innovative approaches to personalized treatment.

Scientific Program and Highlights

This two-day international symposium will feature an exciting and interactive scientific program, including:

  • Two distinguished keynote lectures by internationally recognized leaders.
  • More than 20 invited speakers presenting the latest advances in basic, translational, and clinical research.
  • More than 60 young investigators participating through oral and poster presentations, representing over 40 laboratories and institutions across the United States.
  • Interactive scientific discussions and networking opportunities designed to foster new collaborations and accelerate discoveries in alcohol-associated liver disease.

We are particularly pleased to welcome our distinguished keynote speakers:

George Koob, PhD
Director, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)

David A. Brenner, MD
President and Chief Executive Officer, Sanford Burnham Prebys

The symposium will provide a unique opportunity for established investigators, early-career scientists, clinicians, and trainees to exchange ideas, explore emerging research directions, and develop collaborations aimed at improving the understanding, prevention, and treatment of alcohol-associated liver disease.
