Course Description: Uncover the systemic factors behind environmental inequities and learn the paths to advocacy and reform. This course offers a deep dive into the history and key principles of environmental justice, emphasizing the links between environmental degradation, health outcomes, and policy initiatives. Students will analyze impactful movements, dissect policies, and gain the tools needed to lead in creating fair, healthy, and sustainable environments for all communities.

Required Reading Materials: 

1) "Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class, and Environmental Quality" by Robert D. Bullard 

2)"The Quest for Environmental Justice: Human Rights and the Politics of Pollution" by Robert D. Bullard 

3) "Environmental Justice and Public Health: An Overview" by Barry S. Levy and Jonathan Patz, Journal of Public Health Policy (recommended for Week 2) 

4) "Environmental Policy and Public Health: Air Pollution, Global Climate Change, and Wilderness" by Barry L. Johnson (Week 4 focus on policy) 

5) "From the Ground Up: Environmental Racism and the Rise of the Environmental Justice Movement" by Luke W. Cole and Sheila R. Foster

Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. Select the correct ticket pricing during registration. If we cannot confirm your eligibility, you will be requested to pay the full registration price for the course.  Eligibility details can be found here. 

Withdrawals & Refunds: 

If a course is canceled or closed, the registrant is notified immediately, and a full refund is processed automatically unless another course is requested. Registrants who wish to withdraw from an active course must complete the online Odyssey Refund Request Form. Attach any documentation to support your request (e.g., medical documentation, family crisis documentation, etc.).

  • 100% refund: Prior to the start of the course and after the first class.
  • No refunds: After the first week of each course unless in exceptional cases.

For single-session courses:
100% refundable within two (2) business days of the event.

Please note, refunds apply only to the tuition portion of an Odyssey participant’s charges and are not applicable to any fees or gifts made to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association. Registrants will be notified by email if a refund is approved within five (5) business days.

ABOUT Nancy Metayer Bowen

Nancy Metayer Bowen, MHS, is a distinguished Environmental Scientist and Coral Springs City Commissioner, recognized for her commitment to environmental and social justice. With extensive experience in government and nonprofit sectors, Bowen has championed initiatives in environmental conservation, public health, and equity. She established Coral Springs' first Sustainability OEice and led eEorts to hire a Sustainability Manager, addressing climate impacts and promoting sustainable practices citywide. As a key member of the Broward County Solid Waste Authority and Climate Change Task Force, Bowen has advocated for cleaner energy, waste reduction, and resilience, steering the region toward sustainable solutions.

Bowen’s dedication extends beyond environmental issues to reproductive rights, workers’ rights, and economic equity, ensuring historically marginalized voices are represented in policy discussions. Her work emphasizes inclusive, equitable processes that drive sustainable progress. In addition to her local roles, Bowen serves on the boards of Avanse Ansanm and Friends of the Earth and advises on the AEordable Housing and Climate Change Task Forces.

A graduate of Florida A&M University and Johns Hopkins University, Bowen’s achievements have earned her the United Nations Clean Water Advocacy Award, recognition as a Top 20 under 40 by the Haitian-American Chamber, and induction into the CLEO Institute's Leadership Circle.
