Course Description: This practical course helps emerging and current leaders in research and technical fields move from “doer” to effective team leader. Explore evidence-based leadership practices, learn the BEAR communication technique, and apply concepts like mise en place to improve workflow. Learn concrete tools to build capacity, strengthen accountability, and create sustainable, high-performing teams. Participants will send updates to an accountability partner in a mutually agreed-upon format (e.g., text, email, call, voice note).
Required Materials: A device that runs Zoom with a camera, microphone, and speakers. Adobe Acrobat reader for readings in pdf format.

Dr. Schock is a learning expert who provides workforce development and evaluation services at her firm, Natalie Schock LLC. Dr. Schock’s specialties are leadership and operations support for research and technical teams, training, and mixed-methods evaluations. She is currently developing a model of leadership based on Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, an officer in the U.S. Revolutionary War. Previously, Dr. Schock worked as an education researcher at the University of Denver, where she facilitatedtrainings for hundreds of frontline workers and coordinated the development of a $2M professional development and learning app. Dr. Schock has also worked as a learning practitioner in diverse settings, including as a Teach for America classroom teacher (South Bronx), a writer and project manager at an educational media startup (NYC), a teaching assistant at Perkins School for the Blind (Boston), and a youth mentor through AmeriCorps (Oceanside, CA). Dr. Schock has a PhD in education from Johns Hopkins University and an MA in teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education. She lives in Colorado.
