Set in Gilded Age New York City, the story of Ulysses S. Grant’s Tomb is so much more than the old Groucho Marx joke, “Who’s buried in Grant’s Tomb?” When the heroic Civil War general and two-term President Ulysses S. Grant died in 1885, he was the most popular man in America and in a nation still divided a generation after the Civil War, he was the only person beloved by everyone. His New York funeral was the greatest ever witnessed in the United States and his tomb in Riverside Park remains to this day, the largest tomb in American history. But its amazing story is virtually unknown.
We will join Louis Picone, the best-selling & award-winning author of "Grant's Tomb: The Epic Death of Ulysses S. Grant and the Making of an American Pantheon" as he explores the little-known story of Grant’s Tomb. For a generation, more people visited Grant’s Tomb than the Statue of Liberty and its significance deepened as it became the only place in America where former Civil War enemies would gather to celebrate reunification. Following its story through the twentieth century, we will discuss how Ulysses Grant’s reputation - and his Tomb - descended into ruin before amazingly rising again.
Following the discussion, we'll walk to and enjoy a three course lunch at Pisticci with Louis.
