Ken has an integrative, systems view of urban ecosystems, arising from his years of research at the US Forest Service, Baltimore Ecosystem Study and Baltimore City DPW Office of Water Quality Mgt. Teaching experiences include the Natural History Society of Maryland (presentations & an Urban Stream Program), UMBC (6 courses, & many invited course lectures) and the JHU Odyssey Program (3 prior courses.)
He is currently “retired” but is active, studying & writing about urban ecosystems, and giving presentations (e.g., recently at the Ecological Society of America, the Society for Freshwater Science, and the Baltimore Ecosystem Study.) His focus is on using an historical, engineering and eco-sociological “urban watershed continuum” framework for teaching and citizen science. His perspective on urban waters is broad, ranging from the science and culture surrounding groundwater & stream ecosystems to engineered water and wastewater networks. His present work with the Natural History Society of Maryland as an aquatic invertebrate curator is the basis for his efforts to spread the word that “urban streams are not dead” and are deserving of our attention and affection, as they are valuable aquatic ecosystems that are keystones of the larger urban ecosystem.
