Course Description: This class intends to explore the difference in coverage of a story/event when the objective for the news team is high ratings versus when the objective is to inform. We’ll explore coverage practices, including story choice, guest choice (for interview programs) order of stories and choice of questions in the commercial news world versus the non-profit news world.

Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies 

Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. Select the correct ticket pricing during registration. If we cannot confirm your eligibility, you will be requested to pay the full registration price for the course.  Eligibility details can be found here.

Withdrawals & Refunds:

If a course is canceled or closed, the registrant is notified immediately, and a full refund is processed automatically unless another course is requested. Registrants who wish to withdraw from an active course must complete the online Odyssey Refund Request Form. Attach any documentation to support your request (e.g., medical documentation, family crisis documentation, etc.).

100% refund- Prior to the start of the course.

50% refund- During the first week of the course.

No refunds will be given after the first week of each course unless in exceptional cases.

Please note, refunds apply only to the tuition portion of an Odyssey participant’s charges and are not applicable to any fees or gifts made to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association. Registrants will be notified by email if a refund is approved within (5) business days.

 

ABOUT Tanya Davis

Tanya Davis recently departed NBC's Meet the Press, where she was an edit manager, back-up line producer, senior producer of the magazine program and co-manager of the intern program. She began her work at NBCUniversal as a segment producer on Morning Joe at the start of the COVID pandemic. Her career in television news began in 1995 as a freelance writer and producer for Reuter’s International TV. Since then, she’s worked for media outlets across the political spectrum, from Fox News Channel, when it launched in 1996, to BET News to C-SPAN. Ms. Davis came to C-SPAN after graduating from Georgetown University Law Center. She was a producer on the morning news program Washington Journal and later went on to C-SPAN’s Book TV, where she oversaw production of the programs After Words and In-Depth. She has now returned to her roots in print news, where she began in the early 1990s as a journalism student in Austin, Texas. In 1994, she transitioned from music writer to politics and covered the historic all-race elections in South Africa from Johannesburg, as a freelance writer for the Austin American-Stateman. Ms. Davis lives in Baltimore with her family, where she also teaches Kung Fu.
