Course Description: Through class demonstrations, masterclasses, lectures, and coaching, students will engage with various styles of music and with each other as they learn about writing and singing their own music and covering songs. Performing is not a requirement of the class, although students are encouraged to engage deeply and actively with the musical material. The format of the class will be determined by individual student projects, abilities, and interest areas.

 Course Objectives:

 • Learn to analyze, play, and sing songs from American Folk traditions

 • Demonstrate increased specificity and meaningfulness in lyric and melody analysis and/or writing

 • Learn about home recording techniques and production software

Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies  

Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. Select the correct ticket pricing during registration. If we cannot confirm your eligibility, you will be requested to pay the full registration price for the course.  Eligibility details can be found here. 

Withdrawals & Refunds: 

If a course is canceled or closed, the registrant is notified immediately, and a full refund is processed automatically unless another course is requested. Registrants who wish to withdraw from an active course must complete the online Odyssey Refund Request Form. Attach any documentation to support your request (e.g., medical documentation, family crisis documentation, etc.). 

100% refund- Prior to the start of the course. 

50% refund- During the first week of the course. 

No refunds will be given after the first week of each course unless in exceptional cases. 

Please note, refunds apply only to the tuition portion of an Odyssey participant’s charges and are not applicable to any fees or gifts made to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association. Registrants will be notified by email if a refund is approved within (5) business days. 

ABOUT Alison Wahl

Alison Wahl’s work as a vocalist, composer, and songwriter spans many genres and seeks to center authentic human presence. Her music is earnestly human, stubbornly optimistic, intricate, and thoughtful. Her newest EP, “Songs of Change,” was released in September of 2022. Equally at home on the operatic and oratorio stage, Alison was praised by the Chicago Tribune for her “appealing,” “bright, vibrant soprano.” She has appeared as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony, the Boston Pops, and the Rochester Philharmonic. 

Alison was a vocal fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and a young artist at the Steans Music Institute at the Ravinia Festival. She won an Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera’s National Competition. She holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts and a Masters degree in Voice Performance and Literature from Northwestern University and a Masters in Composition from the Peabody Institute.
