At a pivotal moment for health systems across Latin America, the Johns Hopkins Latino Alumni Network and the Sociedad Mexicana de Salud Pública present a timely conversation between two of Mexico’s leading public health voices. This webinar will explore how Mexico can navigate current health challenges while building toward a more equitable and resilient future, drawing on insights from both academic research and frontline experience. Dr. Díaz Quiñonez is a distinguished public health scientist whose career bridges academia, government service, and international cooperation. He was trained as a pharmaceutical chemist-biologist with a doctorate in Biomedical Sciences from UNAM and professional training in epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has served since 2001 as a WHO consultant, leading health systems capacity assessments under the International Health Regulations in countries across the Americas. During his career, he has helped found four WHO Collaboration Centers in Mexico and has held strategic positions in the Mexican federal government that have strengthened regional public health through technical cooperation and international health diplomacy. His work continues to inspire a generation of professionals committed to collaborative approaches in global health.

Dra. Jiménez Corona is one of Mexico’s most accomplished epidemiologists, with a medical degree and doctorate in Epidemiology from UNAM, along with specialized training at the Institut Pasteur in Paris and Johns Hopkins University. Her research impact includes 72 publications with over 5,300 citations, 22 research awards, and recognition as a Level 2 researcher in Mexico’s National System of Researchers. Her leadership has shaped national policy across key institutions, most notably as Deputy Director General at the Dirección General de Epidemiología (2013-2019), where she guided Mexico’s epidemiological surveillance during critical public health challenges. Her experience gives her a unique perspective on how data-driven approaches, innovation, and ethical frameworks can guide Mexico toward a more preventive and people-centered public health future.
