Join us for our Dinner & Dialogue Hopkins Series focused on the Semester in D.C. Program facilitated by program director, Dr. Lauren Reynolds, A&S '17 (PhD) and faculty director, Dr. Leah Wright Rigueur  at Founding Farmers Fishers & Bakers located in Georgetown’s Washington Harbor on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Learn the history, the growth, and the success of the Semester in D.C. Program. Discover how you can support and mentor students participating in the program. Connect with alumni in the D.C. area who have a passion for mentorship.

The Hopkins Semester D.C. is an optional, semester-long immersive program designed to integrate and apply concepts from students’ first and second years of coursework through hands-on experiences. This mentored program offers undergraduate students from Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences the chance to engage with Washington, D.C.'s vibrant academic, cultural, and professional landscape. Students participate in a range of activities such as designing projects, conducting research, pursuing artistic ventures, working on commercial initiatives, securing professional internships, and engaging in community-based projects. The program fosters academic growth and career development by combining coursework, research, internships, and exclusive co-curricular opportunities. Students are based at the Bloomberg Center, Hopkins’s new state-of-the-art campus at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, while taking full advantage of the dynamic resources and opportunities available across the Nation’s capital.

ABOUT Dr. Lauren Reynolds, A&S '17

Lauren Reynolds (A&S, ’17) directs the Hopkins Semester D.C. where she serves as the program’s inaugural director and also teaches the internship course. A scholar of youth narratives–the stories we tell about young people and how these stories shape young people’s potential–Lauren is passionate about preparing the next generation of leaders for careers in and around public service. 

 

ABOUT Dr. Leah Wright Rigueur
SNF Agora Institute Associate Professor of History

As a trained political historian, Leah Wright Rigueur's scholarship and research expertise include 20th Century United States political and social history, Modern African American history, with an emphasis on race and political ideology, the American Presidency and presidential elections, policies and civil rights movements, and protest and unrest in the United States. Rigueur’s award-winning book, The Loneliness of the Black Republican: Pragmatic Politics and the Pursuit of Power, covers more than four decades of American political and social history, and examines the ideas and actions of black officials and politicians, from the era of the New Deal to Ronald Reagan’s presidential ascent in 1980.
