Stamford, CT: Fierce Planets - Inspiration of Science and Art

Stamford, CT: Fierce Planets - Inspiration of Science and Art Header Image

Sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association

From space, Earth looks like a shimmering gem suspended in an inky, infinite expanse. But this serene image masks the magnificent and volatile interior forces that make life on its surface possible. The placid appearances of our neighboring planets similarly belie their powers and science fiction-worthy features. Fierce Planets reveals this hidden dynamism through the lens of contemporary textile art inspired by planetary science. Artists translate data and discovery into texture, color, and form—showing how creativity and curiosity intertwine across disciplines.

Join us for an evening of exploration and conversation with three extraordinary voices who bridge science, storytelling, and imagination:

  • Kate Zernike, Pulitzer Prize–winning New York Times journalist and author of The Exceptions, will moderate.
  • Sabine Stanley, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Planetary Science at Johns Hopkins University and author of What’s Hidden Inside Planets?, whose research inspired the exhibition.
  • Ray Jayawardhana, Provost and Professor of Physics & Astronomy at Johns Hopkins and author of Strange New Worlds: The Search for Alien Planets and Life Beyond Our Solar System.

Together they’ll trace the creative currents that connect art and science—from molten planetary cores to shimmering auroras, from the telescopic discovery of distant worlds to the woven interpretations of their mysteries.
