Offered as part of the Fall 2025 Odyssey Alumni Academy - courses exclusively for alumni and taught by esteemed members of our alumni community and faculty. 

Course Description: In this six-week-long class, we will investigate the history, development, and intricacies of the Manhattan Project. We will delve into the political decisions that drove the project, get to know some of the key personalities and the roles they played, the various locations where the Project was carried out, and, of course, the physics of building a nuclear bomb. Materials will not be provided.

Withdrawals & Refunds:

If a course is canceled or closed, the registrant is notified immediately, and a full refund is processed automatically unless another course is requested. Registrants who wish to withdraw from an active course must complete the online Odyssey Refund Request Form. Attach any documentation to support your request (e.g., medical documentation, family crisis documentation, etc.).

  • 100% refund: Prior to the start of the course and after the first class.
  • No refunds: After the first week of each course unless in exceptional cases.

For single-session courses:
100% refundable within two (2) business days of the event.

Please note, refunds apply only to the tuition portion of an Odyssey participant’s charges and are not applicable to any fees or gifts made to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association. Registrants will be notified by email if a refund is approved within five (5) business days.

ABOUT Anders Gårdestig, PhD

Dr. Anders Gårdestig earned a Master of Science in Engineering Physics and a Ph. D. in Nuclear Physics, both from Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden. After his dissertation, he moved to the US and continued research until he switched to teaching. Currently, Dr. Gårdestig is an Assistant Professor of Physics at Newberry College, Newberry, SC. He has also worked as a teacher in the online Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth program.
