Course Description: This course uses two short novels to introduce you to German authors who are just as good as their more familiar British, French, and Russian counterparts, but rarely read in the US. Theodor Fontane’s On Tangled Paths (1888) tells the story of two lovers trapped in a society that valued class over individual happiness. Günter Grass’s Crabwalk (2002) examines the lasting effects of Germany’s Nazi past through a teenager who stumbles into an online neo-Nazi present.

Suggested Readings:

Theodor Fontane, On Tangled Paths, Peter James Bowman, translator, Penguin Classics, 2013.

Günter Grass, Crabwalk, Krishna Winsston, translator, Harcourt, 2003.
