ABOUT Nina Urban

Nina has more than 20 years of experience founding and running biotechnology startup companies to develop University intellectual property into drug discovery and patient solutions, believing that world-class research is the foundation for transformational medicines and commercial success. Currently Urban is Managing Director of Grandview Advisory providing strategic advice to research driven organizations on innovation and commercialization. Previously she was CEO of Valted Seq and VP, Innovation R&D Alliance for Neuraly, both Johns Hopkins spin-out companies developing AI drug discovery technology and clinical therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. As VP, she was responsible for setting up three newcos (including ValtedSeq) and management of University licensing and sponsored research. Prior to Neuraly Urban spent a decade at three premier research universities (Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory, and Johns Hopkins) where she played a university wide leadership role overseeing their startup activity, including identification of commercial opportunities, translational funding, and mentoring. While leading GaTech’s Advanced Technology Development Corporation (ATDC) she was responsible for supporting technology entrepreneurship for the state of Georgia. At Johns Hopkins she joined the leadership team of the university President-led initiative to promote and support entrepreneurship, including the formation of FastForward. Urban’s early “cradle to grave” biotech entrepreneur experience as Founder and CEO of Zygogen, LLC, a platform technology company, provided her with the strategic and operational challenges and insights that inform her institutional and enterprise work. Her industry career began at the bench in drug discovery research at Genetics Institute (now Pfizer). Urban received a master’s degree from Harvard Medical School’s PhD program in Cellular and Molecular Biology and an MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business. Her undergraduate degree was in social and behavioral sciences from Johns Hopkins University
