March 29, March 29, SundayJoin the Sheridan Libraries & University Museums as we celebrate the opening of Dreams of Scholarship: 150 Years of Discovery, an exhibition that explores Johns Hopkins University’s past, present, and future through the lens of its libraries as part of the university’s sesquicentennial celebration. Founded on a bold vision of deep study and imaginative thinking, Hopkins has long been a place where dreams of scholarship spark new ideas and the tenacity to test them. Drawing on rare books, photographs, archival documents, scientific findings, artifacts, and digital collections, the exhibition traces the evolution of the university’s libraries and their enduring impact on teaching, research, and student discovery. It also highlights the vital contributions of the faculty, students, staff, and supporters whose work has expanded access to knowledge and shaped the future of inquiry at Hopkins. This opening celebration also commemorates the 95th anniversary of the Friends of the Libraries, whose longstanding commitment has helped steward and strengthen the university’s library collections for generations of Hopkins students and faculty. ProgramWelcome RemarksElisabeth Long, Dean of the Sheridan Libraries & University MuseumsPanel Discussion and Q&A featuring:Christopher S. March 31, March 31, TuesdayExperience an evening of powerful music as singers from the Peabody Institute’s Vocal Studies department, led by Associate Professor Carl DuPont, present a curated recital of art songs by African American composers. Blending live performance with fresh scholarly perspective, the program will explore how race, gender, sexuality, and class have shaped these works and their reception. Through brief contextual insights, the student performers will connect each piece to its historical moment, revealing how these songs respond to political realities while expanding and challenging the art song tradition. Join us for a thought-provoking performance that offers a layered exploration of music rooted in the Black experience and affirms the ongoing relevance of this repertoire in shaping our understanding of the United States’ complex past.RegistrationRegistration will open three weeks prior to the performance at 10 a.m.Capacity is limited.
