Active Shooter Training in Healthcare: Preparing for the Worst

The threat of an active shooter in a hospital has become a very real possibility. Join us as our speakers discuss the prevalence of this issue, as well as steps healthcare organizations can take to better prepare their staff if such an event occurs. Best practices will be shared based off real world experiences. This program will be presented on Zoom. A link will be shared in advance of the program.

ABOUT John Demming
Director of Operations, HSS

John Demming, MPM, CPP, CHPA is a Director of Operations at HSS, a leading provider of healthcare security services. He has over a decade of experience in hospital safety, security, and emergency management. 

Mr. Demming oversaw the security and emergency management programs at a Trauma designated hospital in downtown Austin, Texas. He currently leads the security programs of 30 hospitals across the state of Texas. 

John earned a Master of Arts degree in Public Management from The Johns Hopkins University. His undergraduate studies were in Public Safety and Security at Florida State University.

John has authored several published works on healthcare emergency management, workplace violence and officer training programs; featured in The Journal of Healthcare Protection Management and the American Nurse Journal.

Mr. Demming is a Certified Protection Professional through ASIS International and a Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator by the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS). John currently serves on the Education and Governance Councils for the IAHSS.

ABOUT Paul Sarnese
Assistant Vice President of Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness, Virtua Health

Paul M. Sarnese is the Assistant Vice President of Safety, Security and Emergency Preparedness for Virtua Health serving southern New Jersey.

Paul has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Rowan University, a Master’s Degree in Safety Engineering from Warren University and a Master’s in Administrative Science from Farleigh Dickinson University.

Paul has been published in Campus Safety Magazine, govCIO Outlook, Total Security Advisor, Annals of Emergency Medicine, Journal of Emergency Nursing, Security Management Magazine, Journal of Emergency Nursing, HcPro, Journal of Healthcare Protection Management, and Hospital Safety and Security Management.

In 2020, Paul was presented with the Russell L. Colling Literary Award from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety for making a significant contribution to the healthcare security, safety, and/or risk management professions.

Paul is a Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator and a Certified Associate Project Manager.

Paul is currently the Immediate President for the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety.

Paul was recognized as the 2022 Campus Safety-Healthcare Security Director of the Year.
