Carlsbad, CA: Oyster Aquafarm Tour & Tasting

Join fellow alumni and friends across Southern California, for a unique sunset experience at Carlsbad Aquafarm! Carlsbad Aquafarm is the only oyster farm in Southern California and they sustainably grow and hand raise shellfish for the local community. Our afternoon will include a guided discovery walk, where we'll learn the history of the aquafarm, the Carlsbad desalination plant, techniques and equipment used to grow their shellfish, learn about the wildlife they attract, see how they clean and harvest the shellfish, get hands on with live shellfish at the touch tank area, and learn about the new grant they've been awarded to do reef restoration work in the Agua Hedionda Lagoon! After that, we'll really polish our skills with an oyster shucking class & tasting, led by an experienced tour guide who'll teach us how to shuck and taste 6 oysters, while overlooking their lagoon. The tasting will include lemons, their house-made house sauce, and fresh drinking water. 

Space is limited and all registrants must be 18+ years of age - each alum will be limited to 1 additional guest (for a total of 2 per registration). Stay tuned for meet-up opportunities, prior to the tour beginning!

While participating in off-campus events and meetings sponsored by the JHAA/JHM/JHHS participants must follow all public health guidelines mandated by the local jurisdiction and venue at the time of the event, including vaccination and masking and distancing guidance. Johns Hopkins strongly suggests that attendees who join in person be fully vaccinated. This is subject to change.
