Course Description:
The subject of the class is Russia and Europe from medieval times to the present. Assigned books cover two periods of intense interactions, 1917-1921 and 2014-2022. Antony Beevor’s Russia: Revolution and Civil War, 1917-1921 (Viking, 2022) will be read over four weeks and Andre Kurkov’s The Grey Bees (Deep Vellum Publishing, 2023) is to be completed by the last class. Beevor is the current best-selling historian in Britain. Kurkov won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2023. The Grey Bees translated by Boris Dralyuk also won the 2023 NBCC Gregg Barrios Book in Translation Prize. The novel concerns Russia’s early war with Ukraine, 2014-2022. Movies offer insights into notions of history and identity.
