Homewood Museum Architecture Lecture: Restoring Clifton Mansion

Homewood Museum

Homewood Museum presents its 2024 Architecture Lecture, featuring a lively panel discussion about current restoration work at Clifton Mansion, the one-time summer residence of Johns Hopkins (1795-1873).

Invited panelists include Nicholas Cairns and Timothy Horjus of C&H Restoration and Renovation, fine arts paintings conservator Laurie Timm, Baltimore architect Vince Greene, and Friends of Clifton Mansion president Henry Hopkins. Using images of ongoing work at the site, they will discuss the process of renovating the mansion while working to balance historical preservation with the needs of a building that serves as an event venue, work space, and historic house museum. A reception with the speakers will follow the talk.

ABOUT Nicholas Cairns
Owner, C&H Restoration and Renovation

Nicholas Cairns is co-owner of C&A Restoration and Renovation, which specializes in the restoration and updating of historic buildings. Nick hails from the Philadelphia suburbs, where he spent his childhood in a foundry, helping his father, a sculptor, make plaster and bronze casts. After college in Ohio and several years in New York and Boston, Nick moved to Baltimore in 2004. Here, he developed a small business using his mold-making and casting skills to restore ornamental plasterwork in older homes throughout Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

ABOUT Timothy Horjus
Owner, C&H Restoration and Renovation

Timothy Horjus is co-owner of C&A Restoration and Renovation, which specializes in the restoration and updating of historic buildings. Tim grew up in the Midwest and cut his teeth in the trades helping his dad restore pipe organs and working as a house framer and general contractor. He came to Baltimore to attend graduate school at the Maryland Institute College of Art, ultimately receiving an MFA from the University of Maryland. Along with doing carpentry work and floor refinishing, Tim taught art, from kindergarten to the graduate level. C&H is proud to have employed a few of his former students over the years.

ABOUT Laurie A. Timm
Owner, Laurie A. Timm Conservation, LLC

Laurie A. Timm is the owner of Laurie A. Timm Conservation, LLC and a professional associate with the American Institute for Conservation. An accomplished senior fine arts painting conservator with over 25 years of experience leading conservation and preservation projects, she has worked on multiple projects throughout the Baltimore/Washington DC area. Laurie specializes in uncovering and revealing the original painted surfaces hidden under multiple paint layers. Her Italian training gave her a particular interest in allowing the “passage of time” to remain visible while conserving the work's original aesthetic character. She acted as project manager and spent much of her career on the conservation of the Brumidi Corridor within the United States Capitol. Spending over 15 years on a large-scale conservation project of a historically significant architectural space prepared her for many of the conservation challenges and requirements needed to complete the conservation of a historic building. She is currently part of the team restoring Clifton Mansion in Baltimore.

Laurie received a BA in Fine Arts from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, St. Mary’s City, MD. She received formal conservation training at Lorenzo De’ Medici Art Institute of Florence, Italy, including wall paintings and frescoes.
