Exhibition Opening Celebration for "Leave No Trace: John Work Garrett in the American Outdoors"

Evergreen Museum & Library and archival photo of JW Garrett

Join the Johns Hopkins University Museums to celebrate the opening of Leave No Trace: John Work Garrett in the American Outdoors, our latest exhibition inspired by the history of Evergreen and Baltimore's Garrett family, which valued outdoor recreation and natural history.

About the Exhibition

Leave No Trace: John Work Garrett in the American Outdoors explores the historic relationship between outdoor recreational travelers and the natural landscapes they explore.

Using objects acquired by Garrett during his lifetime, family photographs, and works by John Muir, Frederic Remington, and other renowned outdoor writers and artists, the exhibition examines American conceptions and experiences of outdoor recreation around 1900. By juxtaposing contemporary camping with Garrett’s turn-of-the-century experiences, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect upon preservation movements, the value of National Parks, and the evolution of outdoor gear and public outdoor engagement.
