Using John Work Garrett’s own 1939 talk “Natural History in America Before Audubon” as a starting point, this presentation will focus on some of the renowned natural history titles in the Evergreen Museum & Library. Keeping the historical context for the creation of natural history books in mind, we’ll look at several different interpretations via ornithology and botany, discuss methods of illustration as demonstrated by items in the collection, and look through some spectacular images from the pages of John Work Garrett’s books.
After receiving my MA in Art History at Boston University, I returned home to Baltimore in 1996 just at the time that Special Collections was looking for an interim staff member while someone was on leave. Luckily for me, that role became permanent as staffing needs shifted.
In my role as Materials Manager, my main function is to ensure that researchers and books come together when and where they are supposed to. I interact closely with many departments across the library on all the minutia and logistics that go on behind the scenes to make that meeting of researchers and materials happen as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
I have served, shifted, shelved, and stewarded the books in the Special Collections of the Sheridan Libraries for almost 30 years now. And yes, I do regularly climb the ladders in the Main Library.
