Evergreen Museum & Library presents Music in Words, as Judith Krummeck reads from her novel, The Deceived Ones, with complementary music performed by the renowned viola da gambist John Moran.  The Deceived Ones is a contemporary reimagining of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The book is set in Baltimore and has a strong musical theme, with one protagonist playing viola da gamba, another being a composer, while a third is a soprano. This event will take place in the Far East Room, where one of the scenes in the novel takes place.

Judith Krummeck is the author of a memoir in essays, Beyond the Baobab, about her immigration from Africa to America, and the biographical memoir, Old New Worlds, a finalist in the 2020 Next Generation Indie Book Awards and the 14th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards. Her debut novel, The Deceived Ones, was published in Spring 2024. She hold an MFA in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts from the University of Baltimore, and she is the evening drive-time host for Maryland's classical music station, WBJC.  Judith is the recipient of a Creativity Grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.

Viola da gambist and Baroque cellist, John Moran, is an instructor and the interim chair of the Historical Performance Department at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where he is a founding co-director of the school’s critically acclaimed Baltimore Baroque Band. He has performed and recorded with many of Europe and North America’s leading period-instrument ensembles. As a core member of REBEL he tours extensively, and he is artistic director of Modern Musick, in residence at Georgetown University. John is a longtime principal player with the Washington Bach Consort and co-creator of that group’s Wunderkind Projekt outreach program. He is currently president of the Viola da Gamba Society of America. He holds performance degrees from Oberlin and the Schola Cantorum in Basel as well as a PhD in musicology from King’s College London.
