Course Description: Anyone who believes short stories differ from novels only in length has never read a great short story.  In this most popular course, we will enjoy works by classic writers, including Anton Chekhov, Guy de Maupassant, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Leroi Jones, Flannery O'Connor, Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, Carson McCullers, William Faulkner, and Mary Lavin.  Discussions will focus on character, theme, setting, and historical/cultural contexts--but, above all, on artistry.

All stories are available in Studies in Short Fiction, 2nd edition, edited by Douglas A. Hughes OR in other collections OR online.
