Course Description:

The early novels of James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and James Baldwin, as well as three of their short stories, provide insight into these writers' personal lives and definitely into their later novels.  After we've read and discussed them, participants will get a chance to write a brief page (optional) about their "amazing early life."

March 27, 2023 - A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN by James Joyce

April 3, 2023 - "Araby" by James Joyce and THIS SIDE OF PARADISE by F. Scott Fitzgerald

April 10, 2023 - "Winter Dreams" by F. Scott Fitzgerald and THE SUN ALSO RISES  by Ernest Hemingway

April 17, 2023 -  THE SUN ALSO RISES (continued discussion) and "The Capital of the World" by Ernest Hemingway

April 24, 2023 -  GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN by James Baldwin

May 1, 2023 - Concluding Discussion and Optional Assignment:  Write one page of "My Amazing Early Life" to read and discuss in class.

Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. Select the correct ticket pricing during registration. If we cannot confirm your eligibility, you will be requested to pay the full registration price for the course.

ACCESSIBILITY & ACCOMODATIONS
The Johns Hopkins Alumni Association is committed to providing reasonable and appropriate accommodations to participants with disabilities. Participants who need accommodations must notify the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association at odyssey@jhu.edu at least four weeks prior to the beginning of class.

WITHDRAWALS & REFUNDS
If a course is canceled or closed, the registrant is notified immediately, and a full refund is processed automatically unless another course is requested. Registrants who wish to withdraw from an active course must complete the online Odyssey Refund Request Form. Attach any documentation to support your request (e.g., medical documentation, family crisis documentation, etc.).

100% refund- Prior to the start of the course.

50% refund- During the first week of the course.

No refunds will be given after the first week of each course unless in exceptional cases.

Please note, refunds apply only to the tuition portion of an Odyssey participant’s charges and are not applicable to any fees or gifts made to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association. Registrants will be notified by email if a refund is approved  within (5) business days.

ABOUT Lynne Agress

Lynne Agress, Ph.D., has taught at Johns Hopkins University, Smith, and Goucher Colleges, and the University of Maryland.  She was president of BWB-Business and Legal Writing, Inc. and still conducts writing and editing workshops for companies.  She is the author of THE FEMININE IRONY and WORKING WITH WORDS,  as well as numerous articles in magazines and newspapers.  For the past 10 years, she has been writing opinion pieces for THE BALTIMORE SUN.
