Course Description: The Jim Crow era of American history was characterized by the systematic segregation, discrimination and violence toward African American citizens primarily in the South during the 19th and 20th centuries. It represents one of the most relevant periods of American history in understanding race relations today. This class will examine many of the people, events, and issues of the time, as well as the historical background of the period. It will explore how Black and White people responded to the many challenges they faced and efforts to end Jim Crow during the Civil Rights movement.
