Offered as part of the Spring 2024 Odyssey Alumni Academy - courses exclusively for alumni and taught by esteemed members of our alumni community and faculty.
Course Description: AI is a powerful research and brainstorming tool for creative writers. With all the hysteria and hype about generative artificial intelligence, it’s important to learn what it is, its capabilities and limitations, and how to use it effectively and ethically. Like other computer programs, AI is susceptible to “garbage in/garbage out.” The key to efficient use is to provide AI with the data it needs for proper brainstorming. The course focuses on a system for identifying the building blocks of your creative writing, and then using that information to create specific prompts. With specific prompts, AI generates the brainstorming responses that spark ideas for your creative writing. In three 90-minute sessions, learn to brainstorm regarding your genre, setting, plot development, character development, style, and pace. To sharpen your skills in each of these topics, you are shown examples from classic novels in the public domain. In learning how to identify and communicate your creative writing building blocks, you create a solid foundation for your material. With this solid foundation, brainstorming with the bot is easy, fun, and effective. The power is in your prompt.
