Course Description: We will examine the ways in which Jazz has had an impact on Broadway from the 1920s with Eubie Blake's "Shuffle Along" to the influences on "Hamilton" in current times.

Withdrawals & Refunds: 

If a course is canceled or closed, the registrant is notified immediately, and a full refund is processed automatically unless another course is requested. Registrants who wish to withdraw from an active course must complete the online Odyssey Refund Request Form. Attach any documentation to support your request (e.g., medical documentation, family crisis documentation, etc.). 

100% refund- Prior to the start of the course. 

50% refund- During the first week of the course. 

No refunds will be given after the first week of each course unless in exceptional cases. 

Please note, refunds apply only to the tuition portion of an Odyssey participant’s charges and are not applicable to any fees or gifts made to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association. Registrants will be notified by email if a refund is approved within (5) business days. 

ABOUT David Bunn

David Alan Bunn, Educator Broadway Music Director Pianist, Arranger, Composer for Rolling on The T.O.B.A. which he rave reviews and a coveted picture on the front of the New York Times Music Section is well versed in all things Broadway.


Bunn has been the musical director for the Sophisticated Ladies directed by Maurice Hines at the Arena Stage, “Forever Swing” starring Michael Buble and Gabrielle Goodman, “Dream Girls”, “Ain’t Misbehavin” at the behest of his mentor Luther Henderson starring Dee Dee Bridgewater, “Lady Day At The Emerson Bar and Grill” starring Jackee Harry, “West Side Story” and “Hallelujah Baby” directed by the legendary Arthur Laurents.


A graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, David Alan Bunn has taught at the Peabody Institute, Savannah College of Art & Design, and Howard University. He has given lectures at Harvard University, conducted concerts Johns Hopkins University for the Peabody Institute and lectured at several prestigious colleges including Berklee College of Music.

ABOUT Gabrielle Goodman

Gabrielle Goodman is an international recording artist, vocalist, educator, composer and author who has several CDs to her credit including Jazz Life, Black Portraits, Spiritual Tapestry, Angel Eyes, Travelin’ Light, Until We Love, the latter two on the Verve label. The versatile singer has been compared to Aretha Franklin, and Ella Fitzgerald for her purity of tone and her inspired blend of jazz and R&B throughout her career. Jazz and R&B enthusiasts all over the world have praised her for the powerful vocal performances on her CDs and in concerts. 

Her tours include the Montruex, North Sea, and Usaba Jazz Festivals. Over the years Goodman has worked with a who’s who of the music industry including Michael Buble, Roberta Flack, Norman Connors, George Duke, Patrice Rushen, Nancy Wilson, Terri Lyne Carrington, Christian Mcbride, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kevin Eubanks and many others. The classically trained soul singer has also worked with The Boston Pops on numerous occasions, The Baltimore, Akron, Syracuse and Yamayuri Symphony orchestras under direction of conductors Keith Lockhart, Julius Williams, Charles Floyd and in theatrical tours including Ain’t Misbehavin’, King and Forever Swing. 

The versatile singer started her career touring the world as a backing vocalist with Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Freddie Jackson, Patti Labelle and Brian Ferry to name a few. In addition to providing backing vocals for many legends, Goodman penned the smash hit, “You Can Make The Story Right” for Chaka Khan. Her compositions also appear on her own CDs, as well as other artists.

A sought-after educator, Goodman has taught at Berklee College of Music in Boston for 25 years. She has also conducted workshops in Japan, Russia, China, Trinidad, Bermuda, Hawaii and various other places throughout the world. A multi-faceted vocal artist whose musicality spans several genres, Gabrielle Goodman is a singer, songwriter and educator whose work is revered by many music industry giants.
