Course Description: After browsing through your favorite literary magazine, have you ever imagined opening those pages to see your short story in print, but wondered how to actually get your work out into the world? Maybe you’ve looked at databases of literary magazines, but have felt too overwhelmed by the sheer number that are open to submissions. You might have even paused to wonder what exactly those magazine editors are looking for and what grabs their attention in a submission. In Submit Now! we will uncover the mystery behind submitting to literary magazines by learning the ins and outs of choosing literary magazines that best fit your story’s style, what exactly captures an editor’s attention, and how the submission process usually works behind scenes at a literary magazine with magazine editor guest speakers. You will also learn the art of short story writing, then apply those techniques to writing and polishing a short story through in-class writing exercises and in-class group workshops. By the end of Week 6, you will have a completed, polished short story, cover letter, and list of at least ten magazines to submit your story to.
