Course Description: With an in-depth look at the battle of Antietam and the Maryland Campaign, participants will come to understand how critically important September 17, 1862 was to the course of American history. Often dismissed as nothing more than a bloody draw, the battle of Antietam was actually a crucial Union victory that stopped what was probably the Confederacy's best chance of winning its independence. It also led President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, meaning the Civil War was no longer just a fight for the union, it was now a fight for freedom. While covering the military aspects of this story, and many of the fascinating personalities involved, the course will also put Antietam in its historic -- and historiographic -- context so we can better realize how our collective memories of it were formed, and reformed, over the 160 years since it was fought.

*Please note that there is an optional tour of Antietam Battlefield on the 20th of April at an additional cost.
