Course Description: As the Stulman Program in Jewish Studies at Johns Hopkins has continued to thrive, so, too, have acquisitions in Jewish Studies in the Sheridan Libraries at Johns Hopkins. Join Mack Zalin, Librarian for Jewish Studies, and Sophia Shoulson, PhD candidate in the Jewish Languages and Literatures program, as they showcase unique materials that illuminate Jewish life, culture, and history. From Holocaust memorial books to captivating Jewish folk art and rare documents detailing Jewish life in Baltimore, this session offers a fascinating overview of recent additions to the Sheridan Libraries' collections.

Local registrants will have an exclusive opportunity to engage with these remarkable artifacts in person at the Special Collections in the Brody Learning Commons. Scheduling details will be determined in coordination with the instructors.

Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies  

Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. Select the correct ticket pricing during registration. If we cannot confirm your eligibility, you will be requested to pay the full registration price for the course.  Eligibility details can be found here. 

Withdrawals & Refunds: 

If a course is canceled or closed, the registrant is notified immediately, and a full refund is processed automatically unless another course is requested. Registrants who wish to withdraw from an active course must complete the online Odyssey Refund Request Form. Attach any documentation to support your request (e.g., medical documentation, family crisis documentation, etc.). 

100% refund- Prior to the start of the course. 

50% refund- During the first week of the course. 

No refunds will be given after the first week of each course unless in exceptional cases. 

Please note, refunds apply only to the tuition portion of an Odyssey participant’s charges and are not applicable to any fees or gifts made to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association. Registrants will be notified by email if a refund is approved within (5) business days. 

ABOUT Dr. Mackenzie (Mack) Zalin
Librarian

Dr. Mackenzie (Mack) Zalin is Librarian for Classics, Comparative Thought and Literature, Jewish Studies, and Modern Languages and Literatures in the Sheridan Libraries at Johns Hopkins University. He earned a PhD in Classical Studies from Duke University and a Master of Science in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Zalin oversees collection development, reference, and instruction in the Sheridan Libraries for French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish, and Yiddish languages and literatures.

In addition to his regular duties at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Zalin serves as the chair of the Advisory Board of the American Office of L’Année philologique to the Society for Classical Studies. He is also an ex officio member of the Société Internationale de Bibliographie Classique. His recent contributions to the Comedias Sueltas USA project are discussed in a forthcoming article co-authored with Szilvia Szmuk-Tanenbaum in the Bulletin of the Comediantes.
