What is Space Weather? How Does it Affect Life on the Earth?

Brought to you by Odyssey

April 24, 2023 (1 session)

Monday, 6:30 - 7:30 PM ET

Course Description:

This is an evening lecture to discuss how solar flares, solar wind, and Coronal Mass Injections (CMEs) are generated during a Solar storm. The interaction between these structures and the terrestrial magnetic field and the atmosphere can create conditions known as Space Weather. The energetic radiation from the Sun can damage the communication satellites and disrupt power grids that provide electricity on the Earth. They are harmful to astronauts in space and can disrupt the GPS time synchronization and internet.
