Course Description: Participants will view labor history as portrayed in film, discuss that history and learn how it may be applicable today in the recent desire for unions by Starbucks and Amazon employees amongst others. The instructor will provide anecdotal context from being a union activist for decades, and students will be encouraged to share their reactions and experiences. A lively discussion is expected and participants will have a greater understanding of what a labor union is, what it can and cannot do, and view how accurately it is portrayed in film.

Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies

Withdrawals & Refunds: 

If a course is canceled or closed, the registrant is notified immediately, and a full refund is processed automatically unless another course is requested. Registrants who wish to withdraw from an active course must complete the online Odyssey Refund Request Form. Attach any documentation to support your request (e.g., medical documentation, family crisis documentation, etc.). 

100% refund- Prior to the start of the course. 

50% refund- During the first week of the course. 

No refunds will be given after the first week of each course unless in exceptional cases. 

Please note, refunds apply only to the tuition portion of an Odyssey participant’s charges and are not applicable to any fees or gifts made to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association. Registrants will be notified by email if a refund is approved within (5) business days. 

ABOUT James Ward Morrow

J. Ward Morrow has served, since 2003, as an Assistant General Counsel and Legislative Counsel for the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), which represents over 700,000 federal and DC government employees across the country, including employees of the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, Environmental Protection Agency, Social Security Administration, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, Housing and Urban Development, Bureau of Prisons, among others. 

In this capacity, Mr. Morrow has served as primary legislative counsel for the union on all types of legislative matters that impact the union and federal sector labor relations. He handles administrative litigation and labor issues before the Merit System Protection Board, the Federal Labor Relations Board, the Office of Special Counsel, the Federal Services Impasses Panel, Administrative Judges, and Arbitrators. His work on a variety of federal employee Hatch Act cases and whistleblower cases have been covered significantly by media outlets, in particular his work with whistleblowers at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
