Course Description:

Interdisciplinary intro to Asian American diversity aims to ease racial tensions spiking with the Covid-19 pandemic. PBS' Asian Americans documentary series are talking points to widen perspectives. We face perpetual foreigner challenges struggling for the American dream beyond black-white diversity, equity, and inclusion. Join multicultural conversations respecting immigrant diaspora differences in promoting global understanding! We'll survey anti-Asian hate plunging to the Chinese Exclusion Act, Vincent Chin tragedy till recent Oscars Asian wins. All are welcome too to tandem Asian+American: Linking Generations via Film course.

Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies  

Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. Select the correct ticket pricing during registration. If we cannot confirm your eligibility, you will be requested to pay the full registration price for the course.  Eligibility details can be found here

Withdrawals & Refunds: 

If a course is canceled or closed, the registrant is notified immediately, and a full refund is processed automatically unless another course is requested. Registrants who wish to withdraw from an active course must complete the online Odyssey Refund Request Form. Attach any documentation to support your request (e.g., medical documentation, family crisis documentation, etc.). 

100% refund- Prior to the start of the course. 

50% refund- During the first week of the course. 

No refunds will be given after the first week of each course unless in exceptional cases. 

Please note, refunds apply only to the tuition portion of an Odyssey participant’s charges and are not applicable to any fees or gifts made to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association. Registrants will be notified by email if a refund is approved within (5) business days.

ABOUT Y Chia

Y Chia, MSEM, MSE earned 3 combined JHU degrees in Civil & Systems Engineering, Engineering Management in Environmental/Health Engineering|Environmental Systems Analysis, Economics & Public Policy. He cofounded JHU Asian Pacific Islander Desi American alum-student affinity, served several Inter-Asian Council groups, East Asian Studies' Student Advisory Committee, Multicultural Leadership Council, Grad Rep Organization Advocacy Chair, MSEM Rep with vast community service, winning Alum caRING for WSE, Governor's Service Award-Emerging Leader, Presidential Service Gold Award and much more. He connected students, faculty, staff and community as Baltimore Collegetown Network grad assistant, Baltimore County Board of Education Advisory Council Vice Chair, starting a decade ago as Student Member and the only student also serving the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council. 

Fluent in Chinese dialects including Mandarin, Cantonese, some Taiwanese and Romance languages, he studied abroad in advanced Chinese-English film and other translations, doing STEM internships and research as well. He aims to extend his multilingual, interdisciplinary STEAM and econ background to policy/law.
