Join the Johns Hopkins Sheridan Libraries for an opening celebration of Gertrude Stein in Circles: Spheres of Life and Writing, showcasing the Robert A. Wilson Collection of rarely exhibited first editions, drafts, correspondence, photographs, and ephemera linked to Gertrude Stein (1874–1946). This new major exhibition documents how the pioneering American writer fostered avant-garde connections throughout her lifetime and explores Stein’s ongoing legacy as a beacon for artists, writers, and LGBTQ+ communities.

ABOUT Elisabeth Long
Sheridan Dean of University Libraries, Archives, and Museums at Johns Hopkins University

Elisabeth M. Long is Sheridan Dean of University Libraries, Archives, and Museums at Johns Hopkins University. She oversees library services in the six Sheridan Libraries and coordinates library services provided by all schools of the university through the University Library Directors Council (LDC), which she chairs. She also oversees the university’s historic museums, Homewood Museum and Evergreen Museum & Library.

Prior to becoming dean at Johns Hopkins, Dean Long served as associate university librarian for information technology and digital scholarship at The University of Chicago Library since 2016, where she began her career in 1998. She served as interim library director and university librarian from December 1, 2021 to April 21, 2022, and was an Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Leadership Fellow in 2018–2019. She served on several UChicago committees, including the Digital Humanities Oversight Committee and Digital Media Archive Committee, and was a board member of the university’s IT Leadership Council.

Dean Long holds a BA from St. John’s College, an MLIS from the University of Maryland, and an MFA in book and paper arts from Columbia College Chicago.

ABOUT Gabrielle Dean
William Kurrelmeyer Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts in the Sheridan Libraries

Gabrielle Dean, PhD, is the William Kurrelmeyer Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts in the Sheridan Libraries, and an adjunct professor for the Department of English and the Program in Museums & Society. Her research focuses on the exchanges between textual and visual culture during the industrial era of print, and on the history of the archival imagination. She has published in the journals Digital Humanities Quarterly, Modernism/modernity, The Journal of Modern Periodical Studies, and Textual Cultures, among others, and in the collections Primary Stein, Emily Dickinson in Context, and Past or Portal?: Teaching Undergraduates Using Special Collections and Archives. She has curated exhibitions about H. L. Mencken, Stephen Crane, John Barth, and Edgar Allan Poe. Her forthcoming exhibition on Gertrude Stein will open September 2024. 

ABOUT Taylor Hillary Boykins
Mezzo-soprano

Taylor Hillary Boykins is an American mezzo soprano hailing from Michigan who boasts a robust performance schedule in the DC Metro area. Playful yet eloquent, Taylor’s melodic style, delicate phrasing, and powerful voice have gained her notable recognition for her "exquisite and expressive voice and crystal-clear diction" (Lori Laitman). Boykins earned her Master of Music degree in vocal performance from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where she was a protégé of mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from Oakland University in Rochester, MI under the tutelage of contralto Nadine Washington.

ABOUT Maria Scott
Pianist

Passionate and enthusiastic, Maria Scott has decades of experience as a performer, collaborator, and educator. She has appeared as a soloist with the Ambler Symphony, in venues such as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, and competed abroad in Europe. Scott was a scholarship recipient through the YoungArts Foundation, and holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Piano Performance from Peabody Institute.
