Ban the Tan: Your Skin, the Sun, Cancer, and Aging
As we prepare for the summer sun, join us for a chat with Ashani Weeraratna, PhD, Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Dr. Weeraratna will present essential information on current research into melanoma, review the impacts of an individual's choice to tan or wear sunscreen, and explain how those choices are influencing her lab’s research focus.
Ashani Weeraratna is a groundbreaking researcher exploring crucial questions about the role aging plays in cancer. Her findings on age-related differences in responses to both targeted therapy and immunotherapy for cancer are leading to a change in clinical practice. Weeraratna’s work in melanoma prevention includes a public health approach. She recently helped lead a campaign to introduce sunblock dispensers throughout Philadelphia and talk to children about the dangers of tanning. In 2019, Weeraratna joined the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health as Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor.
