Course Description:

Russian writers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries excelled in the short story and the novella, and in key respects developed these as recognized literary forms. Participants will read stories by Gogol, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Babel, and Zoshchenko. Lectures will cover the life and work of the authors, the times in which they wrote, and key insights into the stories. Time will allow for some discussion. Links to online versions of the stories will be provided. Assignments are due on day of class.
