Advances in medical science and treatment are enabling many women to thrive despite a diagnosis of breast cancer. For many, this feared disease is treated as a chronic illness. Join medical oncologist Karen L. Smith, M.D., and former administrative director of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center and two-time breast cancer survivor Lillie Shockney, M.A.S., as they discuss new treatment and management strategies, including medications that improve both the quality and length of life for patients with breast cancer.

Karen L. Smith, M.D., is a medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital, and a member of the Johns Hopkins Breast Cancer Program and the Ovarian Cancer Program. Dr. Smith is also an assistant professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. 

Dr. Smith has an expertise in breast cancer, cancer genetics, cancer survivorship, clinical trials and toxicology. 

Dr. Smith earned her medical degree from Rush Medical College. She completed a residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a fellowship in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Smith also earned a Master of Public Health degree with an emphasis on epidemiology from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School to build a foundation for conducting clinical research. She went on to complete a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

 

Lillie Shockney headshotLillie D. Shockney served as Administrative Director of Johns Hopkins Breast Center from 1997 to November 2018 and Director of Cancer Survivorship Programs from 2011 to November 2018, at which time she retired from her hospital leadership roles. She continues to serve on the faculty in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and also as the co-developer of Work Stride - Managing Cancer at Work, an employee benefit developed for Hopkins employees that now is being utilized by businesses and corporations nationally. 

A two-time breast cancer survivor, Lillie has worked tirelessly to improve the care of breast cancer patients around the world. She is a registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science degree in health care administration from Saint Joseph's College and a Masters in Administrative Science from the Johns Hopkins University. She has worked at Johns Hopkins since 1983. She is also certified as a breast imaging and breast cancer patient navigator.
