About the Local Initiatives Support Corporation
The Ford Foundation conceived of LISC in 1979 as an "'intermediary'—a nimble non-profit with strong community partnerships that would connect hard-to-tap public and private resources with underinvested places and people working to access opportunities every one of us deserves".

LISC bridges the gap between the access to capital from the government, foundations, and for-profit companies, to residents and local institutions. LISC receives funding from banks, corporations, foundations, and government agencies. They, in turn, use that funding to provide financing (loans, grants, and equity) and technical and management assistance to local community-based partners and developers to make investments in housing, businesses, jobs, education, safety, and health.
